Ascom wins major integrated ticketing system order for Venice
Ascom’s Transport Revenue Division is to supply and install an integrated ticketing system for the city of Venice, Italy. ACTV S.p.A, the company responsible for operating over 600 buses and 145 vessels throughout the Venice area, has placed the order with a volume of 10.4 million euros (approx. 15.6 million Swiss Francs).
Ascom’s solution, which is based on an integrated electronic fare collection and ticket validation system, makes contactless ticket control a reality. By automatically recording and assessing passenger traffic, the system enables transport companies to constantly improve their service and the flow of traffic, and simplifies fare management. The systems are highly reliable, low maintenance, user-friendly and can be integrated with additional external systems, all of which makes these systems stand out from the rest.
In Venice, 900 ticket top-up terminals and 146 on-board terminals for contact reloading are to be installed in addition to 70 sales desks, 1’248 contactless validators and 50 control terminals.
As Riet Cadonau, Director of the Transport Revenue Division, states: ”The project in Venice serves as further confirmation of our position as market leader in integrated electronic public transport ticketing systems. Our proven technical expertise, innovation strength and reliability allow us to offer and implement cost-effective solutions”.
The first completely contactless system of this kind was installed on the isle of Capri in 2002. Since then, a combination of contactless and magnetic strip systems have been successfully introduced in
Milan, Naples, Brescia, Perugia, Treviso and Terni. As a result, Ascom has supplied the greatest part of all public transport ticketing systems within Italy. The Transport Revenue Division not only developed, supplied and installed the systems, it also provided a professional consulting and assistance to see the projects through.
